Treating Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain condition that affects the muscles, ligaments, and tendons, causing widespread pain and tenderness throughout the body. In addition to persistent discomfort, patients often experience fatigue, sleep disturbances, headaches, and difficulty with memory and concentration (sometimes referred to as “fibro fog”).

A hallmark of fibromyalgia is the presence of specific tender points—areas on the body that are especially sensitive when pressure is applied. While the exact cause of fibromyalgia is not fully understood, it is believed to involve abnormal pain processing in the nervous system, making everyday sensations feel amplified and more intense.

Fibromyalgia is more common in women than men and typically develops between the ages of 40 and 60, although it can occur at any age. The condition often overlaps with other disorders such as arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, or migraine headaches, making diagnosis and management more complex.

At Lowcountry Spine & Sport, our treatment focuses on improving quality of life by addressing both the physical symptoms and the lifestyle factors that contribute to fibromyalgia.

Management strategies may include:

  • Medication options to help reduce pain and improve sleep.

  • Physical therapy and gentle exercise to increase strength, flexibility, and energy.

  • Stress management and coping strategies to lessen symptom flare-ups.

  • Lifestyle adjustments that support long-term health and improved daily function.

The right combination of therapies can significantly reduce symptoms and restore energy.
